Early Evaluation
Like many things in life, early notification and evaluation is critical to forming a correct plan of action for the correction of a developing problem, if any are discovered during the evaluation.  Children should be scheduled for this evaluation when they have reached their eighth birthday.  While some children require early intervention before the development of adult teeth, most children, if needed, will be placed on an observation schedule.  The majority of patients will be treated between their twelfth and fourteenth birthdays.  The early evaluation provides an opportunity to plan for the best possible time for treatment to be undertaken, which can save both time and money when treatment is required.

Orthognathic Surgery

This surgery is a corrective measure that treats abnormalities in the facial bones and teeth.  An orthodontist usually is involved to guarantee the teeth are located in the proper locations after the surgery.  The surgery repositions facial bones in order to fix function or aesthetic problems.

The surgery may or may not require several teeth to be held together.  Most patients are able to move their jaw after the surgery.  The procedure itself may last between one and several hours, depending on several different factors.  A restricted diet of soft food is required for six to eight weeks after the surgery.

Orthognathic Surgery may be a corrective measure for patients who suffer from severe over bites or under bites.  The goal is to achieve a functional and esthetic balance for the patient.
